Re: Welcome to the club
I'll be the one in charge of line dance.
Well, line dance practically defines itself. It is whereby a group of dancers that dance in straight lines and rows performing sequential/repetitive dances to different genres of music. Line dance is known for more of mass group dancing, unity, flexibility and creativity. One of the famous line dance is the Macarena. The reason why people are starting to learn line dance because you have a bit of everything from all kinds of dances . Types of genres includes the more older country & blues, standard ballroom ( waltz, viennese waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, tango), latin dances (mambo, salsa, samba, cha cha, jive, rumba) , traditional influences (indian, malay, chinese, african) , Back to 60's/70's , and the more modern influences like jazz, ballet, hip hop, funk and pop. There isn't irish drinking songs too.
Hence, line dance= all dances just that ur dancing in a line and minimal contact.
Advantages and benefits:
1. You often need not have a partner to practice with. You can practice at the comfort of you own home. Unlike ballroom , for example, requires a partner to practice regularly to improve. Line dance however teaches those techniques used in ballroom but in a style of individuality.
2. You need not have a big space. Line dance emphasizes more of upper body movement and footwork. Don't worry, you need not learn to breakdance(although hip hop is a category taught in Line Dance) , grande leaps or pirouttes in ballet, or big slides and floorwork like in ballroom. Line Dance has the flexibility to dancing in any space [even in your toilet while showering]
3. No expensive footwear. You need not to own any special dance shoes although at later advance stages, having a street dance shoes would be an advantage for that extra spring action. Other dances require proper footwear but Line dance just requires you to have a comfortable shoes with good arch support. Ballroom shoes for example (i'm a ballroom dancer myself), could easily cost over rm200 for practice pairs and they have to be imported commonly from Singapore or KL. I don't think any mirian shoemakers produce these type of dance shoes.
4. Open yourself to many type of dance categories. New line dances are choreographed every day or week. In the online database you can access to thousands of different dances choreographed by different people all around the world. Just type any favourite music you like and most likely someone has choreographed a dance for it. Download the "step sheet" ( it's like a recipe for dance) which tells you how to dance according to the music and dance away! I hope line dance perhaps could open you to a specifice dance genre you like and push you for it. Many line dancers move one to learn ballroom or even hip hop to better themselves.
5. Don't like the choreography to the song? No problem. That's where creativity comes in. The movements and techniques are taught to you and you can easily use them to choreograph your on. There is no right or wrong. It's your dance, share it, and perhaps one day someone will dance it like the macarena had done.
6. It's international. UK has started a syllabus for line dancing. Perhaps, one day you could join the international events held annually at Tampa Bay, Florida or even "branch" ones in Penang or KL. It's fun meeting many people around the world dancing to the same music.
Disadvantages:
1. It's not really a disadvantage but opinion varies from one to another. Some might find it boring at first. As most newcomers to Line Dance naturally they are taught much slower dances to grasp the techniques and style. So don't give up. Line Dance isn't boring. As you master the dances at the beginner stage, more challenging dances would be put taught which includes performance dances. It will only be boring if you want it to be.
Hope to see some faces for the Line Dance class. In Malaysia , this is what we usually say " Hope that you'll be a line-dance kaki!" .
I hope that is enough information for all to know. Google more to find out.
Here's a video link of the Guiness Record in 2002 where young and old line dancers dance to "Rasa Sayang" in Singapore. Line Dance originated more popularly from cowboys and cowgirls. So this event is what it's called a "hoedown". It means in their culture putting down their hoes or stop doing their work (farming during the days) and for time of enjoyments and dancing.
